Root canal treatment Top
What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment also called endodontics is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth known as the pulp is infected through decay or injury.
What about aftercare?
Root-treated teeth should be treated just the same as any other tooth. Remember to clean your teeth at least once a day, preferably with a fluoride toothpaste. Cut down on sugary snacks, and keep them only to mealtimes if possible. See your dentist for regular check-ups.
Where can this treatment be carried out?
Root canal treatment is a routine dental procedure, which your dentist will be happy to do for you.
Will the tooth be safe after treatment?
Yes. However, it is better to restore the tooth with a crown to provide extra support and strength to the tooth.
What if I do not have the treatment?
The alternative is to have the tooth out. Once the pulp is destroyed, it can’t heal and it is not recommended to leave an infected tooth in the mouth. Although some people would prefer an extraction, it is usually best to keep as many natural teeth as possible.
Is it expensive?
You can have root canal treatment on the National Health Service. However, due to the time it takes and the skill needed, many dentists prefer to carry out this treatment privately. Your dentist will be pleased to give you an estimate.
What if it happens again?
Root canal treatment is usually very successful. However, if the infection comes back the treatment can be repeated.
What will my tooth look like after treatment?
In the past, a root filled tooth would often darken after treatment. However, with modern techniques this does not usually happen. If there is any discolouration, there are several treatments available to restore the natural appearance.
What does it involve?
The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure. Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to your dentist. At the first appointment, the infected pulp is removed. Any abscesses, which may be present, can also be drained at this time. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for the filling. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle. The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled.
Does it hurt?
No. A local anaesthetic is used and it should feel no different to having an ordinary filling done.
Why is root canal treatment needed?
If the pulp becomes infected, the infection may spread through the root canal system of the tooth. This may eventually lead to an abscess. If root canal treatment RCT is not carried out, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be taken out.

What is gum disease?
Gum disease refers to inflammation of the soft tissue gingiva and abnormal loss of bone that surrounds the teeth and holds them in place. Gum disease is the second most common cause of toothache.
What causes gum disease?
Gum disease is caused by toxins secreted by bacteria in "plaque" that accumulate over time along the gum line. This plaque is a mixture of food, saliva, and bacteria.
What are symptoms of gum disease?
Early symptoms of gum disease include gum bleeding without pain. Pain is a symptom of more advanced gum disease as the loss of bone around the teeth leads to the formation of gum pockets. Bacteria in these pockets cause gum infection, swelling, pain, and further bone destruction. Advanced gum disease can cause loss of otherwise healthy teeth.
How is gum disease treated?
Treatment of early gum disease involves oral hygiene and removal of bacterial plaque. Moderate to advanced gum disease usually requires a thorough cleaning of the teeth and teeth roots called "root planing" and "subgingival curettage." Root planing is the removal of plaque and tartar hardened plaque from exposed teeth roots while subgingival curettage refers to the removal of the surface of the inflamed layer of gum tissue. Both of these procedures are usually performed under local anesthesia and may be accompanied by the use of oral antibiotics to overcome gum infection or abscess. Follow-up treatment may include various types of gum surgeries. In advanced gum disease with significant bone destruction and loosening of teeth, teeth splinting or teeth extractions may be necessary.

At what age should a child have an orthodontic examination?
Age 7, unless you suspect a problem at an earlier age, because most facial asymmetries are likely to be apparent by that time. A timely screening will lead to extraordinary treatment benefits. For others, the principle benefit is peace of mind.
At what age should a child have an orthodontic examination?
Age 7, unless you suspect a problem at an earlier age, because most facial asymmetries are likely to be apparent by that time. A timely screening will lead to extraordinary treatment benefits. For others, the principle benefit is peace of mind.
Why are children being evaluated at such an early age?
Early diagnosis and treatment can guide erupting teeth into a more favorable position, preserve space for the permanent teeth and reduce the likelihood of fracturing protruded front teeth. Also, early treatment may shorten treatment time, make treatment easier and in some cases less expensive. It may even provide advantages that are not available later.
Is orthodontic care expensive?
Orthodontic therapy may eliminate the need for other medical and dental treatment. The physical and psychological benefits usually last a lifetime, which makes orthodontics one of the best investments in healthcare and quality of life.
What is the psychological impact of early treatment?
Appearance has been related to popularity, social behaviors, self-expectation, personality style, and self-esteem. Orthodontic therapy may lessen the likelihood that a child will be picked on by other children. Treatment may reduce appearance-consciousness and the emotional scarring that can occur during critical developmental years. Also, as adolescents enter the sensitive teenage years, they become far less receptive to orthodontic therapy.
In addition to esthetic improvements, what are some other benefits of orthodontic therapy?
Additional benefits may include better function, improved cleanability, more favorable wear patterns and greater longevity of natural teeth.
Why is the growth spurt at puberty so important in orthodontics?
This is the time when much of the development of the face occurs. Treatment during this period allows the orthodontist to favorably influence the facial profile in a growing child. Once growth of the facial bones is complete, correction of skeletal discrepancies usually requires surgery.
If I'm not sure about the need for orthodontics, how should the patient he managed?
If in doubt, refer. If you notice a problem and refer to a specialist, your legal and professional responsibilities are fulfilled. Also, an early referral can avoid more complex problems that may worsen with time
What's the problem with waiting until the permanent teeth erupt to refer?
The problem may be one of opportunities missed with respect to growth and development. While patients can be treated at any age, those with available growth may enjoy a substantial advantage. Timely treatment may prevent the need for jaw surgery, extraction of permanent teeth, or fracture of protruded incisors. Early treatment may also help the psychological development. Patients also benefit from guidance of tooth eruption.
Orthodontics for Adults Top
How can I tactfully approach an adult patient who could benefit from orthodontics?
Ask the question: "Are you happy with the appearance of your teeth?" The ill be your guide to further answer will be your guide to further development of the conversation.
At what age is a patient too old for orthodontics?
Patients who have teeth and healthy supporting structures are never too old for orthodontic therapy. Age is not a factor.
Why are adults seeking orthodontics in increasing numbers?
Many adults are receiving orthodontic care that was not available to them as children. They realize that improving the health of their mouths and the attractiveness of their smiles and facial appearances can result in changes for the better in their personal, social, and professional lives. Technical advances have also had an impact on adult therapy.
What are some of those advances?
Advanced technology has produced small tooth-colored brackets that are barely noticeable. Specially alloyed wires are more comfortable, can speed up treatment, and may decrease the number of necessary appointments. New retainers can be placed where they do not show. Also, advanced surgical techniques now allow treatment of many skeletal problems after growth is completed.
Gum Surgery / Flap Surgery Top
What is gum disease?
Gum periodontal disease is a bacterial infection affecting the gums and bone supporting their teeth. Symptoms include bleeding or inflamed gums, loose teeth, bad breath or pain when brushing.
Why should I worry about gum disease?
Left untreated, gum disease can result in gum damage and even tooth loss. Research suggests a link between gum disease-causing bacteria and other diseases and health concerns as well, such as cardiovascular disease, strokes, and low-weight, pre-term births.
What is Progressive Laser Therapy? How does it work?
What Progressive Laser Therapy can do for gums is similar to the Lasik laser procedure for people’s vision. During the treatment - which is fast, minimally invasive and virtually painless and bloodless - the laser passes between the teeth and gums to remove diseased or inflamed soft tissue.
Will the laser gum procedure be painful?
Progressive Laser Therapy requires no cutting or stitches, making it virtually painless and bloodless.
Is it safe to put a laser in my mouth?
Yes. The laser features a very small fiber to reach only the portion of the gums requiring treatment. It gently passes between the teeth and gums, without affecting other parts of the mouth.
How long does Progressive Laser Therapy take?
It typically requires one or two visits after the initial consultation. Depending on the extent of your gum disease, we’ll typically treat one half of your mouth during each session.
How long does it take to recover from the laser gum procedure?
Recovery time varies for each patient. Following traditional gum surgery, recovery can take between 2-4 weeks during which patients can experience considerable pain and swelling. With the laser gum treatment, there is typically a less-than-24-hour recovery period. And because there is no cutting involved, there’s less possibility of post-treatment infection.
Is this treatment approved by the FDA?
Yes, the procedure carries Food & Drug Administration approval.
My dentist recommends traditional gum surgery. How do I know the laser periodontal therapy is right for me?
No single treatment is right for everyone. Ask your dentist or periodontist if laser periodontal therapy might be a good option for you – or contact us for a no-fee consultation and evaluation at 585.385.GUMS 4867 at either of our offices in Pittsford and Geneseo.
Can people with diabetes or other health concerns take advantage of the laser gum therapy?
Yes. Progressive Laser Therapy is safe for patients with health concerns such as diabetes, HIV, hemophilia, or those taking such medications as Coumadin or Cyclosporin.
How much does the laser gum procedure cost?
Laser gum therapy is often less expensive than traditional gum surgery because it requires less visits to the doctor typically two visits for the laser gum treatment compared to four visits - plus with subsequent visits for suture removal and additional check-ups - for traditional gum surgery.
Will the laser gum procedure be covered by my insurance?
Exact coverage depends upon your individual dental insurance. But if your insurance covers traditional gum surgery, it will cover the laser gum treatment as well. Ask us, and we will provide a predetermination of your coverage.
Implant FAQ'S Top
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium fixture that serves as the replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth. The implant is placed in the upper or lower jaw. It will bond with the bone over time and thus serve as an anchor for the replacement tooth. Dental implants can be used to replace a single lost tooth or many missing teeth.
Are dental implants approved?
Absolutely. The development phase of dental implantology ended more than two decades ago. Technology is always being improved, but research studies have clearly established the effectiveness of dental implants. All dental implants are manufactured from safe, biocompatible materials. Titanium implants are inert and are not known to cause any type of rejection phenomenon. All implant devices, dental as well as medical, are regulated by agencies of the federal government.
Are dental implants successful?
With more than three decades of clinical experience and over a million patients treated, crowns and bridges supported by Nobel Biocare implants are highly successful. Our statistics confirm a success rate of nearly 95 percent for individual implants* - even higher for the bridges they support. Dental implants placed in our first patient 35 years ago are still functioning today!
How much do implants cost?
The fee for tooth replacement with dental implants will depend on several factors, including the number of teeth being replaced and the number of implants required to support your replacement teeth. Some additional procedures may be required prior to the placement of your dental implants to ensure the long-term health of your dental implants. Typically, there is a fee for the surgical procedure and a separate fee for attaching the posts and constructing your replacement teeth. To obtain a specific fee estimate, it is necessary to have a doctor examine your mouth. After a thorough diagnostic examination, your dentist will recommend the treatment that is best for you.
Why choose Nobel Biocare implants?
Nobel Biocare has been the innovative leader in the dental industry for 50 years. Our solutions and products are at the very forefront, providing both dentist and patient with efficient treatment procedures, excellent function and high esthetic outcome..
Will dental implants work for me?
Anyone who is missing one or more teeth due to injury, disease or decay may be a candidate for dental implants. The main limitation is the amount of available bone. Your dentist is the best person to evaluate whether dental implants are a viable solution for you.
Is old age a problem?
Occasionally, older patients express concern that their age may prevent them from enjoying the benefits of dental implants. However, health is more of a determining factor than age. If you're healthy enough to have a tooth extracted, you're probably healthy enough to receive dental implants. Certain chronic diseases may contraindicate implant treatment. Your dentist will determine if you are a candidate for dental implants after a careful evaluation of your dental and health history.
What are the advantages of dental implants over dentures or a bridge?
  • Improved appearance: When you lose entire tooth - crown and root - shrinkage of the jawbone may cause your face to look older. Dental implants can stop this process. A traditional denture or bridge doesn't.
  • Maintained natural teeth: With traditional practices, two teeth adjacent to a missing tooth must be ground down to anchor a bridge. Dental implants often eliminate the need to modify healthy teeth.
  • Permanent solution: There are no loose parts to worry about. The implant is stable and comfortable. No adjustment is need after installation. Normally, it will serve its owner for life.
How will dental implants affect my life?
Implant-supported replacement teeth look, feel and function like natural teeth. This means that you can eat and drink whatever you are used to. You can continue smoking as well, if you must. But most importantly, dental implants often improve quality of life in a very concrete way. People who have felt embarrassed and worried because of their tooth problems are often overwhelmed by what new permanent teeth can do for their self-esteem.
Will my new teeth look natural?
When dental implants are used in combination with modern restorative dentistry, their appearance, comfort and function are very likely to exceed your expectations.
Will I be able to chew with the same force and pressure I use with my natural teeth?
Yes. Following a brief adaptation period, chewing capacity is comparable to that of natural teeth.
How much time is required for an implant placement?
Traditionally, the procedure has been performed in two steps. The dentist began by installing the implant, which was left for from three to six months to heal and integrate with the jawbone. During the healing period, the patient was given a temporary prosthesis until the permanent crown could be put in place. Today, there is an alternative to the two-step method that allows you to have the implant installed in one whole piece in one single session. This new method has simplified the procedure a lot, both for patients and dentists. The procedure is chosen depends on several factors, such as the patient's dental health, the number of teeth involved and which teeth are replaced. These factors will also determine the total number of visits to the dentist throughout the treatment period.
Is the treatment painful?
Just as with any surgery, there can be some discomfort. Anesthesia and patient sedation are used to eliminate any discomfort at the time of the procedure. Most patients report that they were much more comfortable following the procedure than they had anticipated. Your doctor will prescribe medications to ease any discomfort that may occur. Ask your dentist to recommend another patient who has already had tooth replacement therapy to assess their personal experience.
How will I feel after the treatment?
It is normal to have some small bruises and swelling in the gum and soft tissues. But usually the discomfort, if any, is treated with an ordinary painkiller. You should expect to be able to work the next day.
How will I care for my implants?
Your new teeth must be cared for and checked regularly, just like your natural teeth. Brush and floss as recommended by your dentist or dental hygienist. See your dentist every sixth months, or more frequently if so advised.
What is the ICOI?

Because no two patients are alike, we offer complimentary consultations to see if we can achieve your smile goals.
What is periodontal therapy?
Three out of four adults aged 35 years or older suffer from gum disease. Gum disease is the second most prevalent condition next to the common cold! Medical research has linked gum disease with heart disease. The question is, why do approximately 80% of Americans have gum disease? The answer is that many people don't realize they have gum disease because it doesn't hurt in the early to middle stages. The American Dental Association refers to gum disease as the "silent tooth killer." By the time 'it hurts' it's almost too late to stop the damage that has occurred. But overcoming and preventing gum disease is easier now than ever before. New technologies can help, such as home use oral hygiene products like the Rotodent toothbrush. We may also recommend treatment with the latest in conservative gum therapy, the dental laser. The Dental LaserT gently disinfects and evaporates diseased tissues from in and around gum tissue and bone. Repeated visits, generally 2-8, allow the pockets to remain disease free and healthy. This new laser therapy is gentle, less painful, has a quicker recovery, and is more costly than periodontal surgery. While surgery may still be needed for some severe forms of gum disease, laser therapy is a conservative, effective, and more comfortable alternative for the mild to moderate cases.

A fixed bridge is used to replace one or several teeth. The teeth on each end of the space are used as anchors abutments. Bridges are not removable by the patient. As with other types of crowns caps, a bridge can be made of metal or porcelain, or a combination of these two.
Why is a Bridge needed?
When a tooth is lost 5 or more other teeth may drift so it is essential to place a replacement tooth as soon as possible. The space left from missing teeth may cause one of several problems. Teeth may drift into the space changing your bite, this changed bite may result in sore jaws, gum disease, or decay due to more difficult hygiene.
How is a Bridge made?
To prepare a bridge, diagnostic models are taken to study the optimum way to perform this procedure. After studies are completed, the teeth used to attach the bridge are carefully reshaped. Impressions are taken and from these impressions, the bridge is made by a certified dental technician. This laboratory time is usually 2 to 3 weeks - during this time a temporary acrylic bridge is cemented to place.
How to care for Bridges ?
Brush and floss daily all areas around the bridge. It is not possible to floss between the replacement tooth and the attaching crowns it is made as a solid piece. Ceramic Crowns Top
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown, also known as a "dental cap", is a restoration that encases the tooth in order to a strengthen a decayed tooth, b repair a broken tooth, or c improve the cosmetic appearance of the tooth.
What is the difference between a filling and a dental crown?
Whereas a filling covers only a portion of the tooth, a dental crown completely encases the visible area of the tooth, creating a brand new outer surface for your tooth.
What does the dental crown procedure consist of?
If you and your dentist determine that a dental crown is the best option, your dentist will first shape your tooth to a minimal thickness and then take an impression of your tooth, which your dentist will send to the lab to make your permanent dental crown. In the meantime, your dentist will place a temporary dental crown over your tooth, and will determine what shade your dental crown will be in order to best match the shade of your teeth.
When your dental crown is ready, you will return back to the office for your second visit. Your dentist will remove the temporary dental crown and then cement the permanent dental crown to your tooth.
Is it possible for my dental crown to pop off?
Although unlikely, occasionally a dental crown will pop off, in which case the crown must be replaced immediately, due to tooth sensitivity and aesthetic appearance. In the case that this happens, please call your dentist immediately.
